My horse was having serious problems in our clay type soil with slipping and
sliding, no traction. I had flat plates on front, bare feet behind. With
addition of hind shoes he improved but still slid around a lot. I switched to
the La Croix Eventer shoe. La Croix is a Canadian company who's shoes are widely
available. The outer edge is rounded over and there is a swedge in the surface
of the shoe that the nail heads seat down into. The swedge goes all the way
around the shoe and increases traction noticeable while the rounded edge eases
break over. For our slippery conditions here I find this shoe works admirably.

About a year ago I had a lengthy discussion on C-serve concerning this
subject.

Many farriers will recommend this type of shoe not realizing that the horse,
when in an extended trot, will slide the feet up to 12 inches while landing.
Any thing that grabs will cause problems. That is why we use flat plates!
