Susan:

Since we are in barley and corn growing area we do not have a problem with
"old" grain and since the mill is only about 15 miles away we get freshly
rolled barley, so the oxidation of the barley kernel is minimal.

We do regular checks on the manure for undigested grain (It is called shit
kicking) On the horses getting the whole corn (only two right now) and that
is about two lbs a day each, we see no undigested feed at all. We figure
more than 2% and we need to go to rolled or cracked but have had only one
horse that needed it.

The older horses, Champagne at 26 and Peeco at 17 (due to foal perhaps
tonight), do not need the additional feed in the corn. They keep well
rounded with about 4 pounds of barley a day and all the goodies they can
graze. Champagne is still good for a fast 25 and love to go. Peeco may go
back to competition after this foal but only time will tell.

As far as satisfying the chewing instinct, I believe that the way we keep
the horses more than complies with that need. There is always something in
front of them they can chew on if needed., A bite of grass and walk, a bite
of rabbit brush and walk and on and on.

Had an interesting one today. It was very windy when we went to feed this
morning and we could not see the horses any place in the pasture. So we
drove the jeep up on the hill to look for them. All seven and a half (the un
born foal = half) were laying down out of the wind in some tall sage brush.
The sun was on them and they were warm and comfortable. Not dumb at all.
