Just for a different perspective:

The racehorses I work with typically consume at least 16 lbs of "sweet feed"
(corn, oats, barley, molasses, vitamin/mineral pellets, protein booster to
16%) a day, plus an equal weight of mixed alfalfa/timothy.

Bigger horses, working harder, consume more. For example, Stanerra, winner of
the Japan Cup, ate 25 lbs of grain per day. A STud Name Sue, 1995's 2yo
pacing champion, consumed in excess of 22lbs of grain daily. Both ate as much
hay as grain.

I can personally name at least 1,000 more winning racehorses that have
thrived on diets of more than 15lbs of grain per day.

I'm not suggesting this kind of diet is appropriate for endurance horses--I
don't know. But I can tell you that horses consuming that much grain do not
experience meltdown.
