This topic has been interesting. In my opinion, as a horse gets closer
to reaching his maximum potential in endurance it becomes more of an art not
science in keeping them going. It's almost a balancing act of training them
hard enough to get them fit enough without breaking them down (metabolic or
physical) - which is really the amount of rest needed to recover from the
stress of hard training or racing. It's just a matter of figuring out that
balance with each individual horse (without breaking the horse in the
process) since they are all different. When I look at results over the years
and see certain individuals consistently being very competitive on several
different horses I know those horses can't all be the "one in a million".
Obviously, these riders are really good at managing this balance.
