I lived on a quarter section a while back, where there was a huge
pasture I had to ride through to get to the road and my conditioning
trails. There were several horses in this pasture, including one witchy,
bitchy mare. She'd charge at my horse, and wheel and kick at us. After I
nearly got kicked one time, I bought a BB pistol. I wore knee high
cowboy boots back then, and I'd tuck this BB pistol in my boot. When the
mare charged us, I'd shoot her in the chest or side a few times with
BBs. I could hit her from a far off enough distance that I never really
hurt her, just stung a bit, and I was careful never to aim towards her
head. I really didn't want to hurt her, just scare her away from us and
keep myself and my horse from getting hurt. After doing this a few
times, she learned to keep a respectful distance when we'd ride past.
I did get a few funny looks from the locals when I'd ride down the
gravel road with what looked like a gun sticking out of my boot. But, no
one ever questioned it or bothered me!
