Karen,

In REPLY TO your comments 03/09/97: 09:02:25 on my statement:
Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect to find SOUND, SANE horses READY to
WORK for under a couple thousand, you wrote

>>I just want to point out that the above statement is your OPINION also! <<

Most emphatically this was OPINION. It was offered so that those of us who
don't have access to a plethora of bargains and who don't wish to find
ourselves challenged can balance the equation by considering ALL of the
costs involved in producing a working horse.

You also said:

>>What you are saying in your post is that you can put a price on, and pay
for sanity. I totally disagree with that one!! The horse that acts
perfectly for one rider (sane horse), can turn into a raving lunatic under
the next owner, if the next owner is not consistent, firm, and understanding
of the nature of horses.<<

I agree heartily with your response and would also offer that you can
substitute that it is difficult to put a price on SOUNDNESS!!

Last year I sold a 10 year old Arabian gelding that I had raised (finally
decided that I couldn't do justice to a 10 year old and an 11 year old with
separate career directions). The horse had an injury (hind end - stifle) as
a foal, and I developed a physical program that not only kept him sound but
nicknamed the "big a--ed Arabian. His forte was dressage and he was
qualified for Regionals in First Level and working solidly at third level.
Just not enough $$$ in the kitty for serious Dressage competition in
addition to Combined Driving and three day 100's.

Alas, alas, his new owner has not kept up the program and now the poor
animal is lame as often as he is sound!

We can only do what best we can and try not to look back! (Does that sound
like a grandparent speaking?)

Best for now and please keep commenting. Don't forget that one man's food
is another man's poison!!
