Hi Lauren,
I have somewhat the same problem with my chestnut Arab every spring.
He runs around with a bare butt for a couple weeks while his new coat
grows in. He has no hair down the backs of both legs, around his eyes,
and in the area around his elbows as a rule. Just a soon as that green
grass in the pasture starts poking up, he starts getting undressed!
He's shedding by the handfuls now and should be half naked in another
week or so.
It could be your mare didn't do it with the previous owners because of
the less nutritional diet and less exercise and grooming. If she's dry
in those areas, you could try adding a high fat supplement to her diet.
I use the "Satin Finish" rice bran product with excellent results, and
he eats it right up. It has a 20% fat content according to the label.
I've had good luck asking questions of the people at "The Horseman's
Advisor" site on the net. They have a resident vet who sometimes pops
in at no charge. You can pay for a consultation as well. The address
is: http://www.horseadvice.com
"NetVet" also has a list of veterinary resources at:
http://netvet.wustl.edu/horses.htm
Good Luck, Nikki
