Nutrition and Strongid C

Apparently last month Matthew Mackay-Smith, Medical Editor of Equus advised
cease using Strongid-C for a horse that was difficult to keep weight off
of. This month he was criticized in the letters column. His response is
interesting and raises a number of questions.

"I did not sugest or expect the mare's protection from patasites to be
diminished. A daily dewormer, independet of its anthelmintic action, also
increases the energy digestibility of feed by up to 40 percent."

The phrase "up to" always sounds like a marketing phrase to me. Exactly
what component of the feed is better digested? Where does this take place -
foregut or hindgut? Does this result in better mineral and vitamin
absorption, or does the increase in energy availability mean less vitamin
and minerals available (due to the lesser feed consumption that would occur
with better energy digestion)? Pfizer has a web site, but nothing on
Strongid-C. Anybody have any more information?
