several rides and have had many well meaning riders tell us we don't
know how to take Pulse and heart rates. Most of these riders do not use
MRM's. I have never had anyone using a HRM argue about the P&R checks. I
believe that they should be required on all AERC events.

Ouch! I don't know about you guys, but this smacks of upper echelon sport
here. Not EVERYONE can afford this kind of device. We have just gotten our
first (thanks, Roger!) and LOVE it. BUT... we competed for several years
without one. We couldn't afford it. Never a metabolic problem. We take very
good care of our horses and are quick to pull. I have seen people WITH them
that depend so entirely upon them that it seems that they are lost without
it. So , I don't believe that mandating them will enhance the sport or the
horse's welfare. It would be really good, no doubt about it. I just don't
think you can tell a competitor to go spend well over $100 for a device
before they can compete. Geez, some folk don't want to spring for $40 for a
helmet! (Tee Hee!)
