Hello Aussies!,
Glad to see a more diverse group coming into Ridecamp and I'm looking
forward to hearing more about endurance in your part of the world. I
found the info on the team who won the first Tom Quilty Endurance Ride
in October of '66. It was Gabriel Stecher on his Arabian stallion,
Shalawi. Stecher rode the entire course bareback in a time of 11 hours,
24 minutes and took home the solid gold Quilty Cup valued then at twelve
hundred dollars. (Here we go with the prize thing again!)
I found this article, full of photos, in the collection of "Western
Horseman" magazines my father gave me last year. One of the pictures is
of Stecher loping his beautiful, alert stallion bareback with just a
neckrope the day after the ride. He sure doesn't look like he did a
hundred miles the day before! The fifth place finisher, Ron Males, took
his stallion to a horseshow the next day and won with him.
The ride was under the supervision of head veterinarian, David
Hutchins, of the Sydney University Veterinary Center, the Royal SPCA,
and the police. There were 27 starters, including two Americans,
D.Benedict, and John Hutton of Nevada. All finishers were awarded solid
gold buckles. If the pictures tell the story, it was a huge success
with some excellently conditioned horses being ridden responsibly.
Happy to Meet You!, Nikki
