Short note on helmets

I had vowed that I wasn't going to jump in an already worn out
discussion on helmets, but would like to point out just one thing-
First, I hear all-too-often the same thing from people in regards to
Christopher Reeves accident - his helmet didn't save him, right?
Wrong. In an interview with Barbara Walters, this question was asked.
His reply was, "it could have been a lot worse. At least my brains
weren't scrambled, too." Despite his accident and resulting
disabilities, he still feels that he has a lot to live for. He still
believes in the value of safety helmets. And rather than just feeling
pity for this man, we respect and admire him for his spirit and will to
live.
Incidentally, he also indicated that the severity of the fall was
compounded by the fact that he did not let go of the bridle when he went
over the horse's head.
Regarding helmet use - what's there to question? Choose wisely and then
live with the consequences of your decision. And if the governing body
of an organization in which you are participating in feels the need to
make rules regarding this, respect this. Remember that following the
rules of a sport is a part of good sportsmanship.
