     My husband brought me home some copper "wool" that is softer than 
     steel, brass, nickel, etc. It cleans all these metals without 
     scratching them. I've used it on the brass buckles and it works great. 
     I'm afraid I haven't a clue where you would buy it. I's used in 
     electronics to clean up contacts on circuit boards.

Try fine steel wool....even a small grinding wheel is taking away too much 
metal and will lessen the life of the brass.
