What an interesting post!

I have a very old mare, who in her younger days learned that fanning the
well house door (allowed to hang open for chickens and cats in the
summer time) she could make a steady BANG BANG BANG BANG that would
bring me running out of the house to see what was going on. She loved
to do it and when I came out the door, I swear she'd smile smuggly. Such
a manuever required thought and maybe experimentation - I don't see how
she could have learned this by mimic.
