how I got started

hello,

One word: 4-H. I showed my ancient gelding (20+ retired H/J) in 4-H and
never won. Then I joined the CTR 4-H club. My first ride was Teddy
Lancaster's Caesar Creek ride in 1985. We came in second and I was hooked.
I loved that club. Now defunct as all of us grew up and the leader quit.
In 11 years, I have only missed that Caesar Creek ride once (in 1986) due
to a horse injury, but I was there to P/R. Lots of things have changed
since then. I was thirteen and rode with a twelve year old on my first
ride - no sponsors needed. No helmets. Respiration still counted. No one
even knew about electrolytes beyond salt.

Very interesting thread going here. Weird how so many different folks get
hooked by this obsessive sport.
