Amy,
We are trying to establish a trail here and fighting city hall so to speak.
We have had the mountain bikers join us and they DON'T like manicured
trails. I quote the head guy: "If we wanted manicured trails we'd ride on
the road". Of course they don't like manure, but their biggest concern is
in trail cutting together. They told us (with humor) we cut the trail so
the branches hit them in the face!
We are trying to get letters of approval from all sorts of folks...and this
guy had some great ideas...Sierra Club, Audobon, 4-H, Pony Club, Mt. Bike clubs....
In our case, the problem is purely political. One or two people can
completely block the efforts of 500. I know, we've been working on the
reality of this trail (and still have not succeeded) for SIX YEARS.
We have found mountain bikers to be great allies. Be sure you get support
from several levels...wildlife, hiking, etc.
