Hi Bonnie,
That brought back the memory of the first time I ever used hobbles. I
had my colt in a soft, sandy, 2 acre corral for his first lesson. I had
him all decked out in a set of GRAZING hobbles (big mistake). After a
few minutes in hand, I'd assured myself that I could safely leave to the
outside of the pen to watch him work it out. I'd no sooner closed the
gate behind me, and that little bugger sniffed the hobbles, threw his
tail over his back, and took off running! He made several circuits of
the enclosure at a full-blown run, even changing leads on the corners!!
Those grazing hobbles were useless on him and I only use figure-8's
now. I still wouldn't fully trust a hobbled horse to stick around, but
the figure 8's just work a little better.
