I was thinking Susan would take this. She will probably post after I do.

MSM derived from DMSO it is a sulphur based derivitive,, sp bad.
IT is a free radical scavenger.. free rads are the parts of damaged cells..
that bang around into good cells and cause futher damage.. post ride or
injury (tramua) swelling

We give products to atttach and neturalize these radicals.. Vit e/ Sel / C
/Zinc/ CQ10 and some other stuff.. was in a post ..
however it appears that MSM is a very powerfull free rad scavenger.. has to
do with the sulphur..
When soft tissue is assulted like from joint disease.. the tissue around the
joint is rubbed by the spurs etc.. it gets sore and inflamed..
MSM reduces the inflamation and reduces the pain.. thus the joint works
better.

BUT the problem is NOT resolved.. as soon as you stop MSM, the tissue damage
comes back.
Long term use of MSM can affect the liver.

That is why the CS products are required along with MSM for JOINT issues
(DJD)
Fix the dry un-lubed joint with a grease job --adequean and any of the oral
flex products you want.. some work better then others..
Once joint has been 'repaired' ..greased
the MSM reduces the soft tissue damage and then can be dropped from the diet.
But you must keep up feeding the CS product.

MSM for MUSCLE damage.. post race feeding. I feed 2x the dose right after the
vet out.. and for the next 3 days then a day or 2 of normal doseage.
This helps clean out the trashed cells in the muscles. I also add 2x the Sel
dose for 2 days and give 5000 iu Vit E for 3 days..
I try to clean up these free radicals as fast as I can. The horse recovers
faster with less post ride damage..

I dont use MSM in a race or 3 days before.. ..I dont see where it would do
much good during a race..anyway.
OH YES.. i found out something MSM WILL TEST.. they use the same test that
tests for DMSO use.. racetrack.. MSM testing is easier.. if you are positive
for MSM you may well be hit with DMSO use.. race track use of MSM in ok but
not DMSO.

SO I was WRONG about MSM testing..

anyway since MSM is to correct a problem, why would I want compete a horse
that needs MSM. MSM offers no protective action like the CS products.

we use to give bute.. I have not used that in 5 years..

and yes I take MSM after a race too.. it works
