I've had similar problems with my horse wanting to be the leader, being 
very bad when I make her go last. When she gets obnoxious about it, I 
just turn her around and make her go the opposite direction, away from 
the others. We have done a lot of riding alone, but she seems to have 
gotten the message. When she gets chargy and I turn her around, she'll 
usually settle down nicely and we can return to the group. 
One thing I learned with an Arabian, it doesn't always help to let them 
try to "run" some of their energy off. I tried it. My horse seemed to 
think that was a reward for bad behavior.
