Brildes and bits don't make horsemen..years of experience and commong sense
do. Halters are okay, so are hackamores, but only for the well-trained and
the well-experienced.

-Teddy, I agree with this, but would add, snaffles, pelhams and
curbs are ALSO okay. All horses, riders, and background are
different too. Depends what works for THAT rider and THAT horse.
I prefer to use a curb on my mares, and ride on a very loose rein.
However, they DO respect the "power" of the bit, and if I HAVE
to stop, I can. Having two small children that are learing to
ride, and will be on the pony and these horses, having a runaway
is something I do awfully hard to discourage.

I thought I was being kind to may mare..I rode her in a Kimberwick which she
loved..gave me control..easily. I put her in a hackamore at 80 miles on the
Old Dominion and she ran away with me for three miles..right into the 88 mile
vet check..almost didn;t pass.....the Kimberwick went back in her mouth.

PS: This was an ex pony club, dressage trained anglo-arab who LOVED
endurance.
