One last Hackamore...

We have found that a horse who is a runaway is going to be a runaway, and no
particular BIT will change his mindset - but retraining will. Fundamentally,
one cannot "ride down" and Arabian and make him submit - you will only have a
fitter horse with teh same mindset! Theoretically, pulling a hrose into
circles not only does not teach the horse a thing, but also is horrible in
the soft tissue structures and joints of the legs. Retraining is necessary,
so that the horse learns to carry himself with balance and self-discipline.
We have been this route a nmber of times with horses who APPEARED at first (&
about 20 thereafter) ride, were real screwballs. Over several months of
retraining, however, we finally came to the (obvious) realization that they
needed to be TRAINED, not RESTRAINED, and with a new sense of self-confidence
in us as riders and a sense of self-control and discipline, EACH ONE of these
horses became delightful mounts, even for our little daughters. It just takes
time and insight. Now we use different types of head- and mouth-pieces
appropriate for a sport or discipline, not to be dependent on what kind of a
mind we are riding. It is a wonderful way to go! only took us how many
years???
