Introductions

I am new to this forum, so I thought I would introduce myself. I live in
Camp Hill PA, a suburb of Harrisburg. I've been doing distance riding about
5 years, some endurance (250 miles) but mostly CTR (1000 miles). I've been
following this forum with interest the past couple of weeks, as I am
interested in doing more endurance rides this year, and want to know how to
change my conditioning/riding strategies in going from CTR to endurance.
So, I have a lot of questions...

I was somewhat surprised that the going recommendation seems to be to
condition at 10 mph. That is faster than I've been going up to now,
including the actual endurance rides I've been on. (I agree with a previous
reply to someone who wanted something in between CTR & endurance - an
endurance pace is what you make it. You can actually go slower than on a
CTR and still complete. I also identified with someone else's suggestion of
getting off & walking - this has worked for me when the horse wants "fast"
and I want "slow".) Anyway, regarding 10 mph, is this at a trot, or a mix
of trot/canter? How much warm-up time is recommended for that kind of work?
(i.e., is walking 15 minutes sufficient, or is something else recommended?)

I like the suggestion to organize the archives, I know I could sure benefit!
I was hoping to find comments on the "Sneakers for horses", but couldn't. A
section with reviews on various distance products would be great.

A few more questions before I close:

1) Any recommendations on a rump rug? I want one that is waterproof but
not heavily insulated, and that drapes well and/or has some means of staying
"centered". The one I have is waterproof, but also so warm that my horse
will overheat under it. It also does not drape well or have a tail strap or
something to keep it centered, so it is continually flopping over to one
side. It is such a pain I hardly ever use it.

2) Any recommendations on a helmet light? (Not something I worried about
in CTR!) I have heard that there are lightweight ones and waterproof ones,
and that you must sacrifice one for the other. Any good compromises?

Thanks for any & all help!
