OK Bob,
I don't mind being wrong or misinformed, that is why I brought it up. And actually now
that I think about it, the distance between each reading of a hand held unit with no
base station could be in error by a lot but your correct that the error is not cumlative
therefore the error in 50 miles would only be 600 feet maximum and that is very good for
an endurance ride.
My only other thought is a old one. Understand your equipment and how it works to avoid
stupid errors. One example would be on switchbacks up a steep mountain. If it took every
reading at the midpoint of the switchback it would be seriously short. So on a trail
that does that you should wait and get a reading at every corner (the switch). As I
mentioned earlier, on a mildly curvy trail the error is not too bad.
