Kat, here, we measure trail distance with either a wheel, a bicycle with
an odometer, or a 3 or 4 wheeler. I have seen it done all ways, and we
even re-measure our trail--The War Eagle, in Tuskegee National
Forest--every couple of years just to note the accuracy. We can tell you
what distance each part of the trail it self is, along with each section
of dirt road that you have to ride.
Many ride managers do it this way---generally, the rides that I have been
on where it was not properly measured, the rides worked out to be a
"touch" longer than originally sanctioned for!! Or so it seems to me and
a few others. Not complaining, I have to ride the same trail as
everyone, so that's ok by me. It just might mean a difference in pacing.
