100 Mile Races

Ever since Cosequin, there's been a number of comments from people concerned
about the possible "racing" of horses. When I began riding/endurance riding
two years ago, I read the books by Holland, Paulo, and others in order to
learn all I could. One thing I picked up was that a 50 was a race, and a
100 was (could be) actually easier on your horse because they were done at a
slower pace. When I read the ride results in the EN and saw 100 mile rides
being finished in 9 hours or so, (1 in 8'55"), I thought "racing." Could a
100 mi ride with a huge cash award be done any faster? What would the rest
of you consider as racing? pj
