Hi Everyone -

Which "Humane Society"? There are many! As a former employee and current
volunteer of a local humane society, I discovered that not all of their
aims are the same, and not all of their means are the same. There are
groups which are more like "possees" that fulfill the legal requirements to
form a "Humane Society", so that they can carry guns and intimidate folks
who don't conform to their ideas of animal care. Please find out what kind
of group is circulating this newsletter.

And please help educate the professional Humane Officers in your area.
Many sincerely want to help animals, but only know small pets or wildlife.
If we don't educate them, they will listen to the activists who take a
prejudiced veiw of human-animal interactions (like our sport and other
legitimate ones). Maybe invite them to one of your meetings where you have
a vet as a guest speaker.

I live in Pasadena, CA, home of the Rose Parade. I have worked with our
Humane Society during the last 3 parades; most recently, the equine unit of
the San Diego HS came to lend a hand (and a trailer) as well. These are
equine-educated Humane Society officers - please don't lump them all
together as the "humaniacs" or "animal rights activists". Remember, these
are the folks who helped to outlaw the "mare-tripping" event at Charros.

Sorry this got long...
