Problem with Sugar?

I've been racking my mind trying to remember what I've read about
feeding grain mixes or electrolytes that contain sugars to horses
during rides. I seem to recall reading something negative about this.
I believe folks were talking about electrolyte mixes at the time. Can
anyone enlighten me about the possible problems caused by a dose of
sugar or molasses during competition?
