Susan Evans writes "I have no objections to anyone experimenting with their
own horse; however whatever results you obtain are not statistically viable
and really can't be reliably applied to 'every' horse." The anecdotal
accounts on the list are fun to read, but only prove that thus and so applied
to that perspm's particular horse at that particular time.
For instance I had a wonderful gelding who developed degenerative bone
disease in a rear fetlock joint. I took him to a well-known clinic where he
was x-rayed and given a steroid injection. Subsequently he received
hyaluronic acid injections into the joint, adequan both IM and IA, and a
daily oral dose of a Flex-free type additive, plus egg-bar shoes. Nothing
worked and I sold him. At the same time I was having trouble with my right
knee, which definitely interfered with my endurance activities. Much to the
horror of my orthopedic surgeon I took the same Flex-free additives and used
a knee brace. The knee got better, I was convinced that I had cured it
with the above measures, and was very grateful. Several years later I had
trouble with my left knee. I did none of the above and the knee got better.
I was very grateful.
