>>> Re: Lack of gut sounds, an emergency? I do not purport to be an expert,
but
in my experience lack of gut sounds indicate that the gut has stopped
functioning properly. No movement. Several reasons, one of the most obvious
is colic. Gut sounds are always a sign that things are functioning normally
in the gut. Lack of gut sounds can be one of the first indications of
problems. If these indications are ignored, well you know what can happen.
If you are really interested in the hows and whys of equine internal
medicine, I'm sure your veterinarian has a variety of literature he would be
more than willing to loan you for a few days so you can read up. Most
veterinarians are happy to share their resources with clients. After all,

MY LOCAL VET??? He hardly knows what to do for anything other than stitches
or treating "normal" stuff...let ME know what to read..no point in asking
him...I rely on ride vets for most information and drive my horse 150 miles
for ultra-sound and other diagnostics. This is appalachia where if a horses
shoes stay on 6 months, they think they have a good farrier...
