Mares returning to work after foaling

Hi everyone,
I find the debate quite fascinating. Fortunately I have an hour and a half
each day in the train to read all this stuff!
Now my question. I have heard much anecdotal information about such and such
mare doing great things in chosen sport, going off to have foal (sometimes
continuing competition in foal), and returning to pick up where she left
off, sometimes doing better. I have also had someone suggest that motherhood
is the end of a good mare in competition. My own experience is limited to my
old standardbred mare. She did 250 miles of endurance, had a foal and two
year break and came back and did another 300 miles, her last ride at 19 yo.
Motherhood did her good.
What experiences have the members of the list had re: mares foaling then
continuing ER?

Regards,

about to visit the stallion (now, which one, they all look lovely!)
