<< The idea of qualifying for these "big money rides"
appeals greatly to me. The fact that I qualified would be gratifying in
itself
and for the large majority, finishing is the point. (I don't know why this is
all in aps - I don't mean to shout). There!
and as Tracy pointed out, it would be a built in safety factor for the
horses AND riders.
This is what the show ring "Industry" says also. Where big money becomes
available, safety factors eventually become ineffective. See the whipping and
gingering and coke problem in the ring. Priorities in breeding and such also
will be altered.
I also have faith in the AERC system and vets that the
controls in place now are sufficient to ensure a good ride.
We also have faith in the AERC system - as it stands now. Again, human nature
being what it is, the beginning of this kind of evolutionary process will
lead us Lord knows where. Andone who thinks thatbig bucks have not changed
the Arabian show ring, please take one step forwrad... NOT SO FAST! :)
Unfortunately, we are dealing with human nature, not pragmatic, idealistic
values. Muney speaks VERY loudly. Ask the pro athletes of today - ask old
Ovitz! I think we risk the very nature of our ride by opening the door to
large cash awards. It is not the samae as offering a trailer. Having worked
in the accounting field for 2 decades, the rammifications of a cash award as
opposed to an award in kind or value is not the same. Whilst not so many
people would find their state of mind "altered" by the offering of a trailer
or saddle, they may indeed be so altered by the offering of $10,000 or
$20,000 in cash. Human nature.

Though Teddy's
suggestion of a vet check at 5 miles to go should also be implemented for
those that might get carried away from the adrenilin rush we all sometimes
get caught up in. I will be following with great interest the outcome of
this discussion. Please add my support to the addition of this new phase of
the sport. It shows that everyone is THINKING. >>
