To Ramey Petticolas-Stroud:

You are obviously energized by the discussion regarding the AERC's drug
policies. I agree that it needs clarification. What is the point of
using C-Flex and ABC ProBi everyday if I can't use it 72 hours before
the ride and during the ride. Am I not setting my horse up for a case
of colic by removing that which the body is accustomed to and adding the
stress of a 50-mile competition on top of it? Frankly, it's downright
scary. I myself need to take supplements for DJD in my knees. It is
the same for my horse. The damage was already done on me years ago by
abuse and neglect to my body. I can prevent the same thing from happening
to my horse by giving her the C-Flex now as a preventative measure. Sure,
my mare can compete without it, but this type of sport is not natural to
these animals. By introducing more stress in the horse's life through this
form of competition it is our OBLIGATION to offer whatever means we have
available to aid them BEFORE the damage is done. We need a more proactive
approach toward the health and well-being of our horses. I don't see anyone
frowning on massage for horses at vet checks. Would this not be considered
along the same lines? And chiropractic?

All of this reminds me of the way our medical insurance companies view
alternative therapies such as massage, accupuncture, aromatherapy, naturapathic,
and supplements. Most companies won't cover any of these. If you want to
take a proactive, preventative approach to your health, you pay for it yourself.
It is time to recognize this in the horse industry. Again I state it is our
obligation.

I recently reread a post from Tom Ivers to the effect that, ". . .if you really
want to do good (by your horse), leave them alone." We are using them in a
way they were not intended to be used. We should be allowed to aid them in
whatever way we can.

The reason I had to post this to ridecamp is because I forgot to write down
your e-mail address for my own records. I am a PNER member in the northwest,
and the next time I see you and Cynthia (probably at Animal House) you will
know who I am. I want to offer my assistance to you in your effort to gain
clarification in this current policy. Please let me know if I can help you.
