Truck differential alert

At 114,000 miles our 4 wd Dodge diesel with a Dana Model 70 differential was
found to have loose shim material in the transfer case. According to the
repair shop this problem is common with the Dana 70 especially for vehicles
that tow 10,000 lbs or more. Some motor homes have had problems after only
30,000 miles. As far as I know there is no preventative. My husband had
installed a magnetic fill plug when we got the truck at 53,000 miles and
checked the plug regularly for wear metal which is how the problem was
discovered. If the stuff is caught early it costs $500+ (in SF Bay Area) for
new, thicker shims and bearings, if later double.
