travel documents revisited

this topic seems to come up regularly

Yes, I NEVER travel without my horse's documents. In Colorado you need the
following:

1) a negative Coggins w/i one year.
2) Health Certificate, no older than 30 days (sometimes less during disease
outbreaks).
3) a current Brand Inspection for travel authorization (not just ownership
transfer).

If the Colorado Highway Patrol has time, (they almost never do here) they
will pull you over and check your docs. Or, if you are in an accident they
will check. Penalties are impound and fines.

During disease outbreak, you may be required to check-in at the
Ports-of-Entry and have a Special Health Certificate.

Wyoming requirements are the same as Colorado and Wyoming Highway Patrol
has little to do. (Even less now that they raised the speed-limit). They
will pull you over and check just to generate revenue for the State. (They
love us folks from Colorado. They see dollar signs when they see us
hauling around horse trailers). Penalties are LENGTHY IMPOUND AND HEFTY
FINES on top of daily board bill for impound.

When in doubt for any state in the US plus Canada and Mexico call--

1-800-545-USDA(8732)

this is the USDA info line for transport of livestock. They have all the
scoop and requirements by state and any disease outbreak info.
