Julie - If I understand the history of the sport, endurance was developed by
horsepeople with a lifetime of experience with horses who believed that
horses could successfully perform over long distances with some speed. As
the sport has grown in popularity it has attracted riders who haven't grown
up on horseback. They are, naturally, having to play catch-up. They are
trying to put horse lore directly into their heads instead of using the
slower route: rubbed in well through the rider's seat during years and miles
in the saddle! Another thought: we live in a technological age - look at
how we are communicating here! And, in the US we also worship science and
technology at the expense of art.
I have just been enthralled by the recent discussions - by the depth
of knowledge contributed freely by those doing the research and by the
intelligence and thoughtfulness of the questions and contributions made by
those out riding their horses. To me, this is the best kind of human
interaction. And to think, its all devoted to improving the quality of life
of our equine buddies.
Here's to science, art, and horses!
