Susan,

Is your girth snug? (Not tight, but in good contact with the horse's
skin?) If it is loose and the horse is taking bigger strides at the
hand gallop, your lead is moving too much or is simply not in contact
with the horse's body. The leads are measuring small changes in
electrical potential as the heart beats. If it doesn't contact the
skin well, it cannot take readings.

Rocket always needs at least one hole taken up after I've mounted and
walked for a few minutes - otherwise we can see daylight between him
& the girth. I don't mind if we aren't using the monitor & he
<promises> not to shy, buck, spin, etc. (HA!) but with the monitor
it becomes a bit more important.

You may also try putting the girth electrode up a bit higher where
the skin doesn't move as much during the canter stride. Experiment a
bit & you will find a way that works.
