My overweight pony, that I do combined driving with, had laminitis last summer.
With agressive and timely treatment, there was no rotation, so I am now in
the process of getting him back into condition again. My vet has talked
about possible thyroid deficiency, as contributing to the overweight problem
BUT she
tells me that pony metabolism is very different than that of horses, and
that the studies of thyroid problems in horses are very poor. The research
designs are faulty, so you can't draw any real conclusions. So no one knows
much about thyroid problems in horses. She is recommending giving my pony
thyrotropin stimulating hormone as you mentioned in your post to the
endurance list. The T3/T4 was normal. Can you explain this to me? I don't
know what we are trying to accomplished here. My pony has to be conditioned
just like the endurance horses, as we do marathons. What is the role of
thyroid in horses that need to be conditioned liked distance horses? what
are the signs and symptoms and dangers of hyper and hypo thyroidism?
