There was an excellent article in TrailBlazer 2 or 3 years ago documenting
some testing in Australia of endurance horses on a treadmill. Samples of
blood lactate were correlated with working pulse rates. Various horses were
used - among those, an unfit Arab right out of a field and another that was
the current top endurance champion in Australia. It took only a moderate
amount of trotting on the treadmill before the unfit horse began to have his
pulse rise and blood lactate build up to a point where he fatigued and had to
quit. The fit horse was able to handle more work and correspondingly higher
working pulse rates and recover from lactate buildup much quicker than the
unfit horse. However, even the fit horse reached a point while working at a
high pulse rate where he became fatiqued and was unable to recover from the
high lactate levels within a reasonable amount of time.

I will look this article up and pass on the issue it is in.
