Truman,

i was talking with a track coach about the Kenyans today. One additional
characteristic they exhibit is very light lower legs and very muscular upper
legs.

When Prefontaine was running at Oregon I had a talk with the Oregon distance
coach--forget his name. He was telling me then about having his marathoners
run stadium steps "for strength at the finish". At that time, he told me,
"Remember, you're not training muscle cells, you're training neurons." A kind
of "ask and ye shall get" approach.
