trail etiquette?

I ran into a few not so friendly riders this weekend and I was really taken
aback as that's not the norm down here in the SE (or in the sport,
really).....

We met up with a 100 miler who was going almost exactly our pace so it was
obvious we were going to be going down the trail together for a while (16
mile loop). Generally this leads to some conversation (where you from, how
long you been riding, etc....) to pass the time and enjoy the trail.
Besides, in case you guys hadn't noticed, I'm a talker <vbg> so I don't see
any point in going down the trail in dead silence. However, after two
attempts at general conversation with this rider (we were right behind/in
front the whole trail) which were met with monosyllabic responses I gave
up. Never been on the trail with someone that didn't wanna chat some going
down a great trail on a pretty day. I know, no one is obligated to talk to
me, etc.....just suprised, that's all. Most riders I know are more than
happy to tell you about themselves and their horses. (course I was getting,
umm, plenty of advice and conversation from my mom so it's not like I had
noone to talk to :->>)

Later in the day (last 10 miles) we were cantering down this fabulous jeep
trail - flat, wide, cushiony, sun shining thru the trees, etc...when we
come up on a lone rider walking slowly. As I went by I called out - Is
everything okay? just out of general friendliness and just b/c one day I'm
gonna do that and that person is gonna need some help. However, this time I
was met with a much less than friendly "FINE". That's it - not thanks for
asking, not have a nice ride, nothing like I had annoyed her by even
asking. I started doing this b/c I've had so many people do that to me if I
was walking Embers on the trail - just a general query as they go by. I
always appreciate it and return the favor when I can.

Now, I'm not saying everyone has to be rosy and become best friends on the
trail - these two <minor> incidents just kind of suprised me as they were
very different responses than I've ever gotten.

Call me silly but I'm there to have a good time and be friendly while I'm
trucking along - isn't everyone else??

Tina and Tony (yep, she's a talker alright - you oughtta be around her for
50 miles!)
