Heart Rates

I have mares who when in condition have resting pulses of 26-28 but

I've only been endurance riding for two years now, and I'm curious to know
if a resting pulse of 26-28 is common? What is average? What is desireable?
I was pretty happy with my mare's resting rate of 34-36, but now I'm not so
sure (this mare is young and not fully conditioned yet; can I hope for a
better rate down the road?)

Seeking comments - thanks, Joyce
