The Glenwood-Blackhorse Gap 60/30 ride was held Saturday, October 12. For
the first time, both the 30 and 60 mile ride were ECTRA and AERC sanctioned.
The ride was successful and received very high marks and gleaming comments
on the evaluation forms.

The ride is held near Roanoke, Virginia, in a family camp ground called Camp
Bethel. The camp has a nice bathhouse with four hot showers and 4 bathrooms
located near the center of camp. The ride briefing and awards ceremony are
held in an indoor dining hall where the camp serves up two family style hot
meals Friday and Saturday evenings.

The trail climbs two miles up to cross the Blue Ridge Parkway on the Old
Sweet Springs Road stage coach route and then two miles down, past the site
of historic Black Horse Tavern, a wayside inn during the 1800's. The
countryside around the Tavern has been the site of searches for the infamous
Beale Treasure rumored to be buried in Bedford County, Virginia. The
Glenwood Horse Trail is a permanently marked equestrian trail that winds 65
miles through the Glenwood District of Jefferson National Forest and is
maintained by volunteers from local horse clubs. The 30 mile trail is
challenging with two significant mountain climbs, single track wooded
trails, 20 feet of pavement, and some gravel roads with no car traffic.
There is adequate water on the trail and water provided at the vet checks.
The ride is managed by endurance riders for endurance riders.

The current plan for the spring ride is to reduce the the ride to fifty
miles by adding in an additional 20 miles of new trail. The change of trail
will reduce the difficulty of the trail and give repeat competators new
sights and views.
