buying a horse

Lucy's life plan is slowly coming together, and within the
next six months or so, I can envisage the purchase of my very-own,
first ever (at 30 yrs, this plan has been in the making for a good
20 years <grin>), in the flesh, horse.

I don't want a high-class, "super" horse - just something that
will be an easy keeper, be capable of some limited endurance-type
activity, a bit of dressage, a bit of jumping, etc. Nothing fancy,
just "useful". It will probably be "arab-y" (I have a soft spot for
them, and they seem to be good all-rounders). I'm hoping to
pay no more than $2500 for something no older than 10.

Does that sound reasonable?

With all this talk about "long distance vetting", I'm curious
as to what a vet checks for pre-sale.

As I say, I don't want "super-horse" and I don't think I want
to breed, so apart from obvious signs of illness/lameness, what
will/should he check for? And how much is such a check likely
to cost(ish)?

Thanks
