[endurance] thumps

A theory about TRUE thumps (not skin twitches):
Yes, we know it is an electrolyte imbalance, but why???
How about STRESS?
I'm not talking about long drives, fast rides, etc. but a horse who panics
or "freaks out" about something in particular.
You all that have dealt with thumps, think back. Did your horse freak out
or get really upset before/during the ride?
I had a horse get it twice. Once, he drove himself into a frenzy in the
stalls at OD before the ride. The second time he freaked about some people
shooting fireworks during a ride. This horse is usually pretty mellow, but
on these occasions he was inconsolable.
I would really like to hear from others who have dealt with thumps and if
your horse got very upset beforehand.
