I couldn't resist a comment on this subject. I'm one of those lucky
people who've been dragged down a road shoulder because I rode in
light weight hiking boots with a tread. A spook/bolt dropped me off to
the side and my foot hung in a stirrup that was dragged across the top
of the saddle. I had the presence of mind to holler Whoa! to my good
horse and extricated myself with only minor injuries. I recommend
caution when choosing a non-riding boot/shoe for riding.

I too got tired of replacing my riding sneakers. I decided to try one
more pair. I bought them out of the Weisse catalog. Of course I can't
call to mind the brand. They sell a typical cheap brand and then this
one that was a bit pricier. The sole has a extension that curves up
the outer side of the shoe at the spot that normally rubs on the
branch of the stirrup and prevents the leather from rubs and cracking.
It has a steel arch support, spur rest and generally durable
construction. I've been using them for nearly 2 yrs now. I don't know
what they would be like for running. They have a good heel.
