Lynette, I like the way you explained this and feel you were right in
your follow-up on allowing a horse to choose its gates. You weren't saying
that a horse should be allowed to run "wide-open" whenever it feels like it
-- your key words were, "good EXPERIENCED horse and good EXPERIENCED rider
who have spent A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER and who are TOTALLY IN TUNE TO EACH
OTHER." In other words, KNOW YOUR HORSE, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, and USE PROPER
JUDGEMENT. I've known folks who've let their horses choose their own gates
and are in-tune enough to tell them when to back off and when to save it.
On the other hand, I'm aware of others who have allowed their horses to
choose their own gates and those people -- who may not have spent enough time
conditioning or were simply clueless -- ended up with a "wasted" horse before
they could finish their ride. Do your homework. Know your horse. Use
proper judgement.
