The original reason that endurancee rides require shod horses is that a
barefoot horse is more apt to go lame and therefore be stranded out on the
trail, holding up personnel at check-points and vet stops and interrupting
the smooth flow of the ride. Experience has shown that the horse with hoof
protection is less apt to end up with a foot problem. About ten years ago a
few rides made an exception for a mustang that had such tough feet it was
almost impossible to nail a shoe on him. But most rides requrie hoof
protection of some sort.
