How do you retrain a kicker? I am starting to ride our 11yo Peruvian
gelding more, and he is an INTERMITTENT kicker. I.e., on some rides
he's irritable and doesn't like to be crowded or passed too close, and
other times he's quite mellow about it. (These are pleasure hacks, we
haven't been in an intense race situation yet.) Right now he's unshod
in back, but I expect to change that this spring.

If I'm paying attention, I can feel him shift for a sideways kick and
can correct him in time with just leg pressure. What about those
sudden kicks backwards when somebody's nose hits his tail?

I'd like to fix this, or learn how to control it better, before we get
into an intense race situation where I'll have too many things to
think about! :-)
