I think that it becomes much more important to be a balanced rider the taller
you are and the smaller your horse is. The range of forward /back places that
you can be balanced at becomes smaller if you are a larger/taller rider on a
smaller horse. (it seems to get even worse if you are on one of those arabians
that are narrow as well because then you have to worry about side to side :-) It
has got to be more tiring for a horse to carry someone who is bobbing and
weaving then someone that is more or less stationary.
I don't know what kind of saddle you use, but you might find it easier to
avoid the forward tipping if you use a dressage type saddle. You also might want
to check saddle fit on your horse to make sure that the saddle isn't tipping
forward because it has too wide tree. The plus side is that if you figure out how
to stay balanced on a virtual pony, it should be a snap to be balanced on a
larger horse
