Hi, I got a 5 foot corral, but see, Aly isn't a pig about the mares. He
doesn't hang on the fence and drool when we are at rides, and I tend to
stay away from the main crowd of horses if possible anyway. PLus he gets
turned out with geldings and is across only ONE hot wire from mares, even
in heat, and has only tried jumping it ONCE, and promptly got both front
shoes stuck in the American wire below the hot wire. He stood there calmly
and waited for us to cut him out and the mares, who were in heat, were SO
unimpressed that they all walked away. my So and I were rolling on the
ground laughing at him! Anyway, he never struggled and let us cut him out
and has never even THOUGHT about jumping again. I can tease him across hot
wire (off of course) and he talks and doe the walk but always behaves
himself. If we had a really piggy mare there, then I would have to make
different arrangements, but so far, so good. THe fence is fragile enoguh
that it easily breaks when they challenge it anyway, so I have never had a
cut or scrape.
IT all depends on your horse I guess.
I expect mare owners with mares in heat to treat their horses like
stallions too, because they are often JUST as bad as the stallion. I was
penned next to a mare one time whose owners didn't bother tying her, and
she kept walking out of her fence cause it was onyl knee high- I finally
got mad and asked them to please tie up their horse- my stallion was acting
fine and I didn't want to be responsible for THEIR negligence. HE was in
fact tethered with another gelding!

I guess I will learn more as we compete more, but for now, I am happy with
this.
