Why? I always go into the trailer with my guys.

I have a 2 horse trailer that has no divider (to stop my scrabler from
scrabling). If I just let the horses walk in, the first one is likely
to just turn around and look out the back door. Then I've got to
turn them around again, and try to get to the hay door before they
circle about. So, I walk in, horse walks in giving me my space, I
hook the trailer tie, walk back, push on the rump, they move over, I
walk out and close the door.

Now, I know there is a potential problem with tieing the horse without
first closing the door, but as I load alone, there's no one to help
out. And as I said, if I don't tie them, they are likely to just
turn around. And if I put treats in the hay bin, they'll grab a bite
and then turn around. Sigh.

Unloading I untie them, they turn around, I open the door, I tell them
to come out, they walk out calmly. And they've been known to stand
quietly in the trailer for an hour or more when I couldn't let them
out. They also stand nicely tied to just about anything as I go through
the long process of grooming the entire herd. Start at one end, brush
everybody. Go back to beginning, do all feet. Go back to beginning,
do manes and tails. Go back to beginning, give treats. Take one out,
work it. Return it. Take out another. etc. Babies get the idea
quick. The others just go to sleep.
